Ashwagandha is a type of Indian ginseng (known as āśvāgandhā in Sanskrit) that belongs to the nightshade family. The dried rootstock of this plant has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 2,000 years and has demonstrated wide-ranging health benefits including:

  • maintaining the healthy function of the body’s immune system
  • promoting healthy sleep patterns
  • restoring energy levels when feeling fatigued and preventing stress from accumulating

Scientific Studies into Ashwagandha

Randomised placebo-controlled, complementary study of Withania somnifera extract for cognitive dysfunction in bipolar disorder Chandrasekhar K, Kapoor J and Anishetty S. A prospective, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the safety and efficacy of a highly concentrated full spectrum extract of Ashwagandha root in reducing stress and anxiety in adults.

The aim of this study was to supplement the current evidence by investigating the anti-stress effects and safety profile of a standardized Ashwagandha root extract (shoden) in healthy adults with mild stress. In this study, we were interested in identifying additional mechanisms of Shoden’s anti-stress and mood-boosting effects in relation to his influence on steroidal hormones. A randomized, blind, placebo-controlled study investigated the effect of Ashwageandha (Withania somnifera) extract on sleep quality in a healthy adult.

We examined changes in morning cortisol (DHEA (s)) and testosterone levels. We hypothesized that Ashwagandha would lead to a greater reduction in stress, anxiety and serum cortisol. Our study confirmed the positive effects of Ashwapandha on testosterone, and we predicted a greater increase in serum testosterone levels over time compared to placebo.

Ashwagandha and Stress

For example, in September 2019 a study published in the Journal of Medicine in 60 healthy adults who said they had high stress levels found that those who took 240 milligrams (mg) of Ashwagandha extract had a significant decrease in mental stress compared to those who took a placebo. A study published in the July / September issue of the AYU Journal found that men with psychogenic erectile dysfunction (men who have difficulty getting and maintaining an erection, psychological or relationship problems or physiological problems) were unlikely to see any improvement in their symptoms for 60 days compared to men who had the placebo. A small study of 60 people published in the journal CureUS in December 2019 found that people who took 250-600 mg of the extract slept better and felt less stress than those who took placebo.

Ashwagandha has shown in animal and human studies that it reduces stress and anxiety. A study in 2000 suggested that it is comparable to the anxiety-reducing effect of lorazepam, an anti-anxiety sedative, suggesting that it may be effective in reducing anxiety.

Ashwagandha and Depression

There is limited research suggesting that ashwagandha may help reduce depression. Increased muscle mass and strength: Research has shown that this herb can improve body composition and strength (4, 20, 22). One study found that the safest and most effective dosage of Ashwapandha for healthy men was to take 750-1250 mg of powdered Ashwageandha roots twice a day to gain muscle strength for 30 days (4).

A 2015 study of people suggested that Ashwagandha root extract can improve a person’s cardiorespiratory stamina and improve heart health. The researchers suggested that the root could be the key to helping the HPA axis stay healthy during work.

Ashwagandha plays a major role in the Ayurvedic Rasayana as an adaptogen in rejuvenating the nervous system and improving our body’s resistance to stress. It is classed as an adaptogen, which means it helps your body cope better with stress. It helps regulate pro-inflammatory factors in the immune system.

Ashwagandha is an ancient medicinal plant and one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda, a form of alternative medicine based on Indian principles of natural healing. It has been used for over 3,000 years to reduce stress, increase energy levels and improve concentration [1]. It is Sanskrit for “smell like a horse” and refers to its unique smell and ability to increase strength.

Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub that grows in India, the Middle East and parts of Africa. For hundreds of years people have been using the roots, oranges and red fruits of Ashwagandsha for medicinal purposes. For this reason, it is known commercially as Indian Ginseng (two non-related species: Villaescusa castillo and Martin-Lopez, 2016; Khare, 2016; 2007; bone and mills, 2013).

Villaescusa Castillo and Martin-Lopez (2016) mentioned that a study carried out on rats to determine the use of the ash chariot as an anxiolytic, anxiolytic and antidepressant has shown that the root is a bioactive substance with an anxiolytic effect comparable to that of lorazepam. Regarding its antidepressant effect, the study showed that it has an antidepressant effect similar to imipramine.

In a study of the effects of Ashwagandha on healthy women with female sexual dysfunction reported (FSD) researchers reported that Ashwapandha can be a useful part of alternative therapies aimed at restoring sexual desire, including reduction of libido, dryness, reduced arousal, pain and problems associated with creating orgasm as well as neurovascular, hormonal and psychogenic manifestations. The study discovered that high concentrations of Ashwag andha root extract (H.care) reduced FSD by helping the body adapt to stress and supporting normal release of cortisol in the blood.

More research is needed, but to date there are promising studies on the health benefits of ashwagandha in animals. Ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest medical systems in the world and also one of the Indian health systems.
